Quality Improvement, Research, and Practice Essay
The chapter discusses approaching an evaluation of a nursing theory by considering how the theory interacts with your own beliefs and current practice. The chapter discusses different criteria that can be used to evaluate theory, In your opinion, do any of these components or criteria seem more significant than others? Is the lack of a com ponent detrimental in some way to the usefulness of the theory? Quality Improvement, Research, and Practice Essay .
There are a range of criteria that can be applied to evaluate a theory. However, the more appropriate approach for evaluating how a theory interacts with personal beliefs and current practice would be one that links the theory to specific changes. In this case, the focus would be on the assumptions behind the theory and how it is intended to work. For that matter, it would address the traditional evaluation questions about to what extent and whether the theory is useful in terms of impacting personal beliefs and current practice. The assumption made is that the theory is selected on the basis of personal views and information sources (Butts & Rich, 2018).

The specific component of the evaluation is contribution analysis, a component that helps to verify the extent to which the theory matches personal beliefs and current practice. Quality Improvement, Research, and Practice Essay .Contribution analysis argues that if the theory is validated with evidence and accounts for influencing factors, then it can be concluded that it interacts with personal beliefs and current practice. In essence, the theory must provide the basis for arguing that personal beliefs and current practice is valid while identifying their weaknesses, thereby identifying where evidence for strengthening personal beliefs and current practice is needed. A causality relationship is also inferred from the plausibility, application, context, and evidence presented in terms of expected outcomes, assumptions and final results (McEwen & Wills, 2018).
The lack of component (contribution analysis) would be detriment to the usefulness of a theory. That is because the component helps in preventing the fallacies of relevance, and unacceptable premises. The fallacy of relevance would offer reason to believe that the conclusion or claim about the interactions is real when further examination reveals that the initial claim may have in fact been invalid. The fallacy of unacceptable premises would take arguments out of context in trying to prove a conclusion. As such, the component is important (Fawcett, 2016).
