I am an ER nurse working there full time for about five years, but now as-needed basis and now full-time in the behavioral health unit. Walden University is a great choice to pursue a scholar-practitioner career. It has a diverse community of career professionals with different backgrounds, enriching you with different ideas and skills (Walden University, 2021). Networking Opportunities
I am a registered nurse, graduated in 2013 with BSN. I have more than seven years of experience working in the medical-surgical unit as a staff and float pool nurse in acute care hospitals. Currently, I am working in the medical-telemetry unit, where I treat patients with several complex medical and mental health disorders. Though most of the patients I have been providing nursing care have medical problems, I frequently encounter patients with mental health illnesses. Over time, I have grown to learn that mental illnesses are as serious as other health problems. In my seven-year experience in acute care hospitals, I have noticed patients with underlying mental health problems get admitted to the medical-surgical unit for medical treatments. During such times, those patients often get less attention regarding their mental illnesses, such as delay in administering their psychotropic medications, lack of therapeutic communication, and failure to provide appropriate milieu therapy. As a result, those patients do not experience the anticipated quality of patient care as other patients. According to the National Institute of Mental Health. (2021, January), mental illnesses are prevalent in the United States. In 2019, nearly one in five (51.5 million) U.S. adults live with a mental illness. My goal is to function as a mental health nurse practitioner to provide resources to connect the vulnerable population with their community resources and prescribe appropriate medication to treat their illness. While searching for a reputable school to pursue my graduate studies as a psychiatric nurse practitioner, A colleague recommended me to explore Walden’s Mental Health Nurse practitioner program. I was impressed by the Walden University’s quality, flexibility, and high academic standards for my intended program. The Walden University’s mission is to provide “ a diverse community career professionals with the opportunity to transform themselves as scholar-practitioners to affect positive social change” (Walden University, 2021, para1) is also consistent with my values, goals, and expectations.

Walden University is also aware of the social change within the community as a deliberate process of creating and applying ideas, strategies, and actions to promote the dignity and development of individuals, cultures, communities, institutions, and organizations. (Walden University, 2011b). As a health care agent, I recognize the impact of quality education on making a positive difference in our society. I hope the Walden University is the right choice to get a quality advanced education, which equips me to be an ambassador to the vulnerable population and fight for a quality health care system for those who need it the most.

What a great point of view. I’m also a medical surgical nurse in the acute care setting and I couldn’t agree more that mental health is often overlooked or more so not addressed as much as it should. I would even go as far as saying that the preparation we get in nursing school and the resources we have in the hospital is limited. According to Dr. Glen Levin, “A person’s mind, heart, and body are all interconnected and interdependent in what can be termed ‘the mind-heart-body connection” (Hicks, 2021). Therefore, mental health is just as important and can have long lasting effects on other physiological systems. Can this overlook be because it’s not taken as seriously? I am so glad you made a point to mention the lack of quality patient care that mental health patients receive. This lack of care goes beyond the care given in hospital settings—it is also going on in outpatient facilities and even correctional facilities. Mental health is still frowned upon as if mental health disorders are not “real” diseases. I truly believe that if members of society and even medical staff received proper training and education, maybe suicide attempts and successful suicide numbers could be reduced. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States and in 2019, 47,511 Americans died by suicide (Suicide Statistics, 2021). In 2019, there were an estimated 1.38 million suicide attempts (Suicide Statistics, 2021). These statistics prove that mental health is a significant problem in the United States and these patients may be lacking resources and overall guidance and assistance.

Walden University’s MSN program seems to be a great fit for you as their goals and vision appear to resemble what you are looking for. Mental health is a very critical part of nursing, let alone life. “The MSN program offers a range of specializations in the most critical areas of nursing today,” (Master of Science in Nursing, 2020). Mental health and being a mental health nurse practitioner is a very critical and important specialization.
