Nature offers many examples of specialization and collaboration. Ant colonies and bee hives are but two examples of nature’s sophisticated organizations. Each thrives because their members specialize by tasks, divide labor, and collaborate to ensure food, safety, and general well-being of the colony or hive.

An example of nursing informatics that is innovative and continues to evolve is the portal for patients to gain instant access to their medical records (Hron 2015). On June 28, 2012, the Supreme Court ruled on the constitutionality of electronic medical records with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act ( PPACA ) (Little 2013). On January 1, 2017, new laws were enacted for Massachusetts residents receiving healthcare stating they were entitled to access their medical records electronically. Recently it became law that patients had the right to access their entire medical record which includes doctor’s visit notes, nursing notes, and results of all tests which include labs, imaging, and mental health information (Dowd, 2016). In theory, it is a patient’s right to have access to their medical information but there needs to have additional safeguards to educate and safeguard patients who do not have the medical knowledge to interpret and understand what they may read Interaction Between Nurse Informaticists and Other Specialists.

There has been more than one occasion when we are called upon to call 911 and stay on the phone with the patient until EMS responds. This situation goes back to my earlier comment of patients sometimes not understanding that this portal is not appropriate for urgent messages.

Another concern is posted lab results, biopsy results, imaging, and recommendations for further testing or procedures that have not been yet reviewed by the individual providers. Nurses should not be the first-line responder to some of these concerns so we will send the message as a high priority response to the providers. Unfortunately, there is often a delay in a response to the patient as the providers are seeing patients, doing tele visits from home, or as an onsite provider for the day.

As always, I firmly believe that the application of data and technology has to find a place for the front line practicing nurse, including us in the development of health informatics. We have great ideas, commitment, passion, and intelligence.

This week’s discussion has helped me to better identify and understand the vital role that nursing informatics will continue to play toward health care reform going forward. At my place of work nurse informacists or technology specialists play a very big role in making sure patient data is kept secure , the doctors and Nurse Practitioners use the Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) and I have seen first hand when the system gives them a hard time , or any new updates the technology specialist or Nurse informacist comes in to help .

My place of work uses both meditech as a Electronic Health record system to store patient data and all and also uses Meta for e-MAR /electronic medication administration record and these systems can fail us sometimes which is called down time , the technology specialist will help us transition to paper and later will put the information back into the e-MAR when the system is back up and running. The nurse informaticist will easily find out if the nurses mistakes from not scanning the ID bracelets of the patients when administering medications to giving scheduled medications either too early or too late and not in the prescriber window of administration , they find out easily and educate the floor nurses of any medication errors and how to further prevent them as medication errors are listed by researcher to be a huge cause of death in the US hence improving the quality of care of patients Interaction Between Nurse Informaticists and Other Specialists.

The interactions between the Nurse informaticist and other health care professionals can be improved by proper and timely communication between the two . Timely communication is very key in any kind of interaction or relationship ,and in health care is one of the major tools we use to better serve our patients and create patient centered care . For example , the doctor ordered a new PRN but couldn’t enter into the Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) the frequency of the times he wanted the patient to have , the technology team had to be contacted to rectify the issue so as the prescriber could meet the exact medication needs of the patient. The impact of the continued evolution of nursing informatics and new emergence of technology to me looks very promising and positive in so many ways but also has its own disadvantages. Nurses are doing more documenting than being by the bedside due to the increase demand of evolving technology , there is a lot of computer work that has to be completed including weekly trainings.
